The Free World
"The Free World is a representation of the so called ‘ghosthotel’ in the Vrijbroekpark in Mechelen, Belgium. Originally intended as a grand urban vision for the provincial city of Mechelen, this ruin has become fossilized, a failed utopia in the middle of a nature reserve. In the archives of Mechelen there only survived one artist’s impression of the original building plans, which was published 40 years ago in a local newspaper." (txt: Marjolijn Dijkman)

Voxel Ville
The image was made from a high-grade aerial laser scan of the city of Dublin. Tommy Hinks, PhD researcher at Dublin University, researches the use of cubes instead of point clouds for large volumetric data models. Unlike points which have no volume nor cast shadows, “Cubes have a clearly defined volume and six distinct surfaces, which means they can be rendered with traditional techniques” Hinks writes about the rendering of these images. The cubes are organised in a hierarchical data structure known as an octree. (txt: field.io)

26 Gasoline Stations
"These twenty-six different images of gasoline stations are collected from the internet. All of the gas stations have been tilted by extreme weather. Much like Ed Ruscha’s 1963 piece by the same name, many of the pictures have been taken through a rolled-down window in a car – but here by disaster tourists, or people fleeing from their homes. The T-structure of the gasoline stations represents an archetypical modernist invention. This is in contrast to the primitive shelter it forms when knocked over. The images reveal a feedback loop: the damaging winds are partially fuelled by the product the buildings were built to sell." (txt: limerickcitygallery)

Wesley Meuris
(txt: Eva Wittocx)
